François Houle - Diegesis of the Tongue

from Isolation Journal 4 - Friends by John Oliver

/

about

Diegesis of the Tongue explores extreme slap tonguing technique to achieve rhythmic motives interlaced with fast arpeggiated melodic lines. The intent, as the title suggests, is to create a narrative within a narrative, with the percussive line telling a story within the melodic framework. The central generative principle for the piece is to shift seamlessly between the physical and cerebral states of awareness.

Clarinetist François Houle has established himself as one of Canada’s finest musicians, in all of the diverse musical spheres he embraces: classical, jazz, new music, improvised music, and world music. Growing up in Montreal, François studied at McGill University and went on to win the National Debut competition and to complete his studies at Yale University. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts for two years, and at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy in 2005.

“a spectacularly versatile clarinetist who appears to have no limitations stylistically or sonically”
—Mark Swed, LA Times
