Gnossienne No. 1

by John Oliver

/

about

This is how I feel about the world right now.

This is an arrangement for electric guitar, piano and synthesizers of Erik Satie's work for solo piano, Gnossienne No. 1, written in 1890.

It is very ambient in nature, atmospheric and lyrical. Erik Satie is the grandfather of ambient music. He invented what he called "musique d’ameublement" or furniture music, music to change the atmosphere of a space, but not necessarily to be actively listened to.

Erik Satie's invented word for the titles of his 3 Gnossiennes is likely derived from his interest in Gnosticism.

Gnosis refers to knowledge based on personal experience or perception. In a religious context, gnosis is mystical or esoteric knowledge based on direct participation with the divine.
