The Prisoner

from Time Capsule by John Oliver

/

about

An early work composed in 1982. There are two things university students don't have: time and money. So when I found myself in McGill University's “Wall of MOOG” studio wanting to mix recorded and processed sounds – a la musique concrète – with all those tone generators, I simply pulled out my key chain and jangled it into the microphone. Then I recorded some improvisations with filtered white noise, some synth tones & drones. After much cutting up of Ampex tape, montage, reversing bits of tape, and multiple passes from two tape machines to the mastering machine, ”The Prisoner”, and “The Rally” were born.
