"A Thousand Points of Light" was created at the Banff Centre for the Arts in August 1991, the culminaton of two weeks of intensive research with interactive MIDI percussion and electronics. A Thousand Points of Light represents the first and only collaboration between Trevor Tureski and John Oliver.

Earlier in the year 1991, The United States and allies forced Iraq out of Kuwait in the First Gulf War. Neither Trevor nor I ever believed in the legitimacy of the war. We knew it was about protecting oil interests and maintaining American war machines in the Middle East. And so during the weeks after the recording sessions, we brainstormed titles and came up with all of the titles based on the massive tumbling textures of the tracks, especially the last track called "Desert Storm."

We release this archival recording on the 30th anniversary of the recording and of the Gulf War, and on the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the USA of September 11, 2001.

FURTHER DETAILS ON HOW WE DID IT
The work is comprised of four sections: The Mass, Fat Head, Night Vibes, and Desert Storm. All of the sound events were initiated by Trevor's gestures on MIDI-equipped vibraphone, tam-tam, bass drum and two Octopad MIDI drum controllers, before being digitally processed by John Oliver through Daniel Scheidt's Norm software and C-LAB's Notator software (precursor to Logic) for ATARI computers controlling the Yamaha sound modules TG77, and two TX802s. All electronic sounds designed by John Oliver. A special feature of the last track, Desert Storm, is the ending: we were recording to 24 track tape, and the tape ran out!
